Who We Are.

Welcome to the Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland web site. It is the purpose of this web site to aid those in researching ancestors who lived in Allegany County, Maryland.

What We Do.

The Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland is a non-profit organization of genealogists. We research our ancestry and family history, and are interested in preserving our family heritage for future generations.

Activities.

The Genealogical Society of Allegany County meets the third Thursday of the months of March, June, September and November. These meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. at the Continuing Education Building of Allegany College of Maryland on Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, Maryland. There is a picnic in August and a Christmas luncheon in December.

Appointments.

Sometimes it just isn’t possible to visit the library during the hours that we are normally staffed by volunteers. Call 301-777-8850 on Monday to make arrangements.

The site also offers information on how to submit queries to the Society, a list of all available resources at the library, and the publications that the Society produces, including a list of past issues of the newsletter. Where are we?

The Research Library of the Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland, is located in the Appalachian Collection of the Library at Allegany College of Maryland, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD. Click here for directions.

The Research Library contains many family histories, as well as a great deal of historical and genealogical material, not only for Allegany County, MD but for those counties and states that border Allegany County. Check often for new material which is donated and/or purchased frequently!

The library is open year around but is closed on legal holidays and in inclement weather (winter), and when ACM is closed for various college breaks. If traveling a distance, it is wise to call ahead.
